@ dianea enjoy ^^ Even if reasons for moving to NetBSD might be a bit meh, glad there's more folks finding it for desktop/laptop/.. use & hope you'll find it nice system to live with :3
@ alexadeswift @ dianea Good luck! I would be interested in the result. Just last month a resurrected one of these with Debian 13 successfully – and pondering the latest news, I would like to move the same way (although FreeBSD would be fine as well)
@ axeln Mine currently has OpenSUSE Leap on it, with the only thing not working being the BMC WiFi. I use an Ethernet dongle instead which gives excellent performance though! I would have like OpenIndiana (a Solaris fork) but that will not boot! @ dianea
@ alexadeswift @ dianea Someone wrote a how to on GitHub and assembled the deb-packets to get the Broadcom wlan running: https:// github.com/willardcsoriano/deb ian-intel-macbook-broadcom-offline
@ dianea Congrats. Can you keep posting about any apps you find that aren't available for it, or any issues with peripherals? Thinking about trying it in VirtualBox on my notebook.
@ d_a_n_a the apps that are missing from NetBSD appear to have better replacements that are in the package tree. Firefox, it is there. No FreeCad, but I like SolveSpace better and it is there. KiCad, yes! So far, all the goodies that I have loved for a long time are here! Enough to make this a serious workstation.
@ dianea a great many years ago I failed to install NetBSD and ended up on FreeBSD instead, before eventually switching to Linux due to work. It seems it is time to one again revisit NetBSD given recent events.
@ davidgerard Yes, video appears to have both Intel and nVidia, but obviously this is the framebuffer mode! Full resolution, just a bit of flickering artifacts when the screen updates changes.

@ dianea also puh those are some nice specs for a laptop o: May I ask which one is it?
@dianea@lgbtqia.space · 1 points · 1h ago
@ k4m1 Thinkpad P15 gen 1, with a few mods, installed 64GB ECC memory just before memory prices went chaos. It compiles code fast!

@ dianea I am going to try and install it on my 2017 MacBook Air this weekend ...

@ dianea ooh. wot's the laptop?
@dianea@lgbtqia.space · 4 points · 1h ago
@ davidgerard This is a Thinkpad P15 Gen1 with the i9 processor. Right now, I'm stress testing it and seems to perform better with NetBSD than Linux 😂
@davidgerard@circumstances.run · 1 points · 1h ago
@ dianea oh nice! augurs well for thinkpads in general that's a P-series which comes with an Nvidia card right? what's it doing for a driver?

@ dianea I'm going to have to try this.
